P-Trap (Drainage)

A P-trap is a U-shaped section of pipe in the condensate drain line that prevents sewer gases or outdoor odors from entering your home. While often used in traditional Ducted Systems, they are also important for certain mini-split installations. The trap holds a small amount of water that acts as a seal while allowing the Indoor Air Handler to drain freely. If your system is connected to a home’s plumbing stack, a P-trap is usually a code requirement. We provide guidance on proper drainage layouts in our Help section. For units that drain directly outside, a simple "gravity drain" is often sufficient without a formal trap. You can find replacement Drain Pans and hoses in our Parts collection. Maintaining a clear and trapped drain line prevents "musty" smells from entering your living space.
