Mini-Split FAQ

Your questions answered by HVAC experts

Welcome to SouthMiniSplits' Frequently Asked Questions page. Here you can find answers to the most common questions about mini-split systems. Many people still don't know much about this efficient and cost-effective technology.

What is a ductless Mini-Split unit?

Mini-splits are heating and cooling systems that allow you to control the temperatures in individual rooms or spaces. With two main components — an outdoor compressor/condenser and an indoor air-handling unit — they are easy to install and don't require complex, expensive ductwork.

What are EER and SEER Ratings?

The Energy Efficiency Rating (EER) is determined by The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute and equals the ratio of cooling capacity in BTUs to the power input in watts. This rating determines the efficiency of the air conditioner when it is operating.

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) is commonly used to measure central and ductless air conditioning. Higher energy efficiency equates to lower electrical bills. All air conditioners must have a SEER rating of at least 13 to be sold in the United States.

What is a BTU?

BTU stands for British Thermal Unit. This unit of measure is used to measure cooling or heating capacity; 1 BTU is the amount of heat required to raise (or lower) the temperature of 1 pound of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit.

Can I install a ductless mini split system myself?

It is not recommended because you may void the warranty. The installation should be done by a licensed professional technician to ensure proper setup and maintain your warranty coverage.

How do I choose a mini split air conditioner?

Like choosing any air conditioner, you need to know how many BTUs you need to cool the area you're trying to condition. You also need to consider the number of zones (air handlers) you need — normally one air handler per room, but if your home has open areas you may be able to cool multiple spaces with one indoor unit.

There are many options and types of indoor units — some are mounted on walls, some can be mounted in ceilings, and others can be floor-mounted.

What is a heat pump?

A heat pump functions similarly to an air conditioner, but instead of cooling the air like it would in summer, it heats the air and redistributes it into the room. It often will not work when temperatures drop below 0°F outside, but most ductless heat pump units heat at 100% capacity at 15°F. If heat is very important to you, an electric wall-mount heater could be added to your room.

What is the indoor unit noise level?

All air conditioners make some noise, but ductless air conditioners have been engineered to be quieter than conventional units. Mini split air conditioners are among the quietest available since the compressor sits outside, and indoor units are designed with noise levels as low as 28 dB (comparable to a light breeze).

How does a ductless mini split system work?

Like conventional HVAC systems, ductless mini split systems locate the noisy compressor and condenser outside the house. But they eliminate the need for basement- or attic-located evaporator units and bulky ductwork by using thin copper tubing that pumps refrigerant directly to discreet wall-mounted blowers inside.

Remarkably, this same unit works in reverse in winter, absorbing heat from the outside air and moving it indoors to heat your home. The result is efficient cooling and heating for year-round, whole-house comfort in most climates.

Is a ductless AC unit more efficient than a central air conditioner?

Duct systems account for up to 30-50% of energy lost in the cooling process. With central air, this is a significant problem, especially if your ducts require sealing. By eliminating ducts altogether, a ductless AC unit can save you 30-50% on cooling costs immediately! Ductless units also use high-efficiency components to further conserve energy.

Can ductless AC units cool multiple rooms?

The advantage of mini splits is their flexibility — they can be used for heating or cooling whole houses or specific zones. They can be purposely installed to best fit your needs. Individual units should be installed for different areas, but they all connect to a single outdoor condenser.

How long do mini splits last?

When properly maintained, most mini split ductless air conditioners last about 20 years. This exceeds the 12-15 year lifespan of most conventional systems, so your mini split will likely outlast other options.

Can mini splits heat and cool at the same time?

You can select only one mode at a time: Cooling, Heating, Dry, or Fan.

Do mini splits bring in fresh air?

Some models, like slim ducts and ceiling cassettes, can bring fresh air indoors with additional accessories. Most systems cool a room by pushing unwanted heat out without introducing outside air.

Do mini splits remove humidity?

Mini splits remove moisture in cooling mode. If you only want to reduce humidity without cooling, you can use "Dry Mode" which focuses on dehumidification.

Do your mini splits come pre-charged?

Yes, our mini splits come pre-charged with refrigerant for easier installation.
