Defrost Cycle

A defrost cycle is an automatic operation where a Heat Pump System temporarily reverses its flow to melt frost off the outdoor coils. This occurs naturally during cold, humid weather when the outdoor temperature drops near freezing. While in defrost mode, the indoor fan may stop temporarily to prevent blowing cold air into your home. Our Cooper&Hunter systems use advanced logic to minimize the time spent in this cycle, maximizing your comfort. You can learn more about how this works during extreme weather on our Help page. Proper drainage is essential during this time, which is why a level Condenser Pad is so important. Once the ice is cleared, the system automatically returns to its heating mode to keep your family warm. It is a vital self-preservation feature for any Single-Zone or multi-zone unit.
